This post has been a long time in the works. Not the mere writing of it, really, but the getting-in-place of the “necessaries” that all combine to make the post even possible.

For quite a few years, I’ve had several clients (from my previous place of employment) come up to me and ask, “Grant, when are you going to start your own business? We love what you do. When are you going to get out there and just do your own thing?” Well, I’m very proud and excited to announce that time has finally arrived. It’s here. I’m doing it. Now. I’ve spent the past several months preparing, getting geared up, and learning a great deal. I went “official” back during the weeks leading up to Christmas, already have some good projects under my belt, and a few others looming on the horizon. It’s rolling. Grant Taylor Photography has finally arrived.

Kristen Cammeyer, photographed May 26, 2011.

It’s been a very unusual, crazy year with all of the huge changes that have gone on, the shifts in thinking and routine, the obstacles, the unknown. I’m feeling really good about it all, though, and am happy to say that this has likely been one of my favorite years ever. I’ve had some wonderful creative collaborations with very good friends, have met some truly remarkable people, gained some new clients, and I’ve put together several bodies of personal work that contain some of the strongest photography I’ve ever created. To me, that’s extremely energizing. Really cool stuff. The neat thing, too, is that this is only the beginning. Things are just getting warmed up.

Jinelle Shengulette, photographed March 13, 2011.

One of the most (symbolically) important steps in my process of the past few months has been the development and production of my new business card. The printing of the cards seemed to really legitimize what I had set out to accomplish. It affirmed my intentions. It made this whole thing mine. I’ve been extremely fortunate to be surrounded by good friends who are talented beyond description, and am thankful to have had their help and involvement along the way. Tim Winter is one of the people on that list. Tim is the brilliant mind behind my business card design, and the rest of my identity kit as well. It was a really neat process to go through with him, to see how he transformed and updated my existing name treatment, applied his own creative sensibility and what he knew of me, then projected it to the card, letterhead, envelopes, labels, website, all that stuff.

Matt Smythe, photographed April 16, 2011

The business card was the first of the stationery pieces to be produced. Through the course of meeting with Tim and Kathy Prozeller, of XPEDX, we finally arrived on the right paper to use, and Tim’s idea for the use of silver ink not only would look cool, but also speaks to the use of silver in traditional photographic processes. More importantly, the combination of the two, married with the character of the letterpress method of printing, would really help to convey the look, feel and soul of Grant Taylor Photography.

Rebecca Garlock, photographed September 2, 2011.

We enlisted the expertise of Dock 2 Letterpress in the printing of the business cards, and their partner-company, Weekend Printer for the letterhead, envelopes and labels. I had met with Tony Zanni at Dock 2 for a couple preliminary tests, Tim finalized the artwork, and Tony placed the order for the plate. On the day we went to press with the cards, I was able to join up with letterpress guru, Dave Eckler at Dock 2, and photograph the entire, wonderful process as Dave printed my cards on a 1953 Heidelberg “windmill” press. From the initial mixing of the ink, through to the finished piece, I was blown away by the beauty of the process and the “stuff” involved. Gorgeous. It was fitting that these earthy, traditional-feeling cards be printed on an antique press, using old methods. My face hurt from smiling that afternoon. It all just felt perfectly right.

The polymer plate for my cards, and a few other necessary tools. Dock 2 Letterpress, December 9, 2011.

Dave was really incredible to work with, patiently answering all my curious questions, and explaining the hows-and-whys of each step in the printing process. After running some initial tests, he discovered that the openings in the small type would fill with ink, if the volume of ink on the plate was too great. After a few rounds of adjustments, he had it all dialed in very sweetly. Dave had also decided to reduce the amount of pressure that the polymer plate was being hit with. In the end, two gentle hits of silver ink, with a 24-hour drying period in-between each, followed by a harder, blind-deboss on the third day would get the cards where they needed to be. Gorgeous and legible, with that wonderful look and feel that only the letterpress process can provide.

I need to take a moment and express my great thanks to the handful of people who have been directly involved with the developing of my identity, branding and marketing pieces, for without their passion, talent and commitment, it would have been a real struggle: Rachel Spence, Tim Winter, Matt Smythe, Tony Zanni and Dave Eckler. I also need to give a shout-out to my very good friends, Dean Milliman, T.C. Pellett, Katelin Ryan, Mieke Smythe, Sherry Jackson, Kristen Valent, Stephanie Miles and Lisa Jane Roman, for the support, smiles and insight they’ve provided along the way. Thank you all so very much! It’s wonderful having you in my corner.

Last October and November, in the heart of the New York State deer hunting season, not only did I find myself pursuing whitetails with archery and muzzleloader gear, but also carving time from several of those days to create some fresh product photography for the Black Widow Custom Bows 2011 Product Catalog. Based in Nixa, Missouri, this company produces some of the very finest traditional archery equipment that can be had.

The PSA-X, Bocote, a take-down recurve, in an optional environment.

Black Widow has been around since 1957, when the Wilson brothers began to build recurve bows for a growing list of customers who coveted high quality archery equipment. The company has evolved through a few phases over the years, and now lies in the very capable hands of Roger Fulton, Toby Essick, and John Clayman. I had the fortunate opportunity to meet these people in May of 2009, when I attended the Instinctive Shooting Clinic, held at their facility in Missouri. These are the sort of folks that make you feel very welcome and comfortable right away, and are amazingly eager to share their knowledge and passion for traditional archery. Everyone that I met at Black Widow seemed to fit this description. It struck me as a very unique and special organization of like-minded people. They’re very passionate about what they do, and the products they create, and it really shows. Being among them, even for a short time, was a truly great experience.

The Precision Compact Hunter, PCH-X in Tulipwood.

To the eyes of this photographer and archer, the Black Widow bow is an incredibly beautiful thing to behold. They are wonderfully functional works of art. They are designed to shoot accurately, and they are designed to hunt. Furthermore, they are just plain gorgeous! Layer upon layer of wood, bamboo, fiberglass and phenolic are painstakingly glued-up to form the backbone of each bow. The muscle of the bow, though, lies in its limbs, which are also built from glass, bamboo and wood veneers. While the “standard” Autumn Oak, Graybark and Ironwood bows are just dynamite to look at and a dream to shoot, one can have their bow built with a truly “custom” touch by ordering an “X” model, that incorporates the exotic wood of the customer’s choice. Other accessories and cosmetic embellishments can be had to make a bow truly unique and personalized.

The Black Widow PMA-X Camo Hunter.

Overseen by Master Bowyer, Toby Essick, the recurves and longbows that Black Widow produces achieve a perfect blend of science and art, of functionality and aesthetic. They are sexy, graceful and powerful, and just plain fun to shoot! They are breathtaking. Their construction is the result of years and years of experience, and maintains a balance of fine hand-crafting and computer-controlled machining.

Detail of a one-piece recurve, the PTF-X, in Honduran Rosewood.

The photographs made during this project were created in Mumford and Canandaigua, New York and also in Washington, Vermont. Because part of the photography was done through the late part of the season, I was able to get some shots of the bows the bows in a slightly snowy environment. That, to me, seemed fitting for the catalog’s January release. The falling snow was not something that would have been too likely in southwest Missouri, even at that time of year.

Detail of the PL-X take-down longbows, in Tiger Myrtle (foreground) and Honduran Rosewood.

When Toby Essick and I had made arrangements a month prior, he had decided to send me six different bows to photograph. Only one of the six he had sent was a one-piece bow. The other five were take-downs, meaning they can be taken apart once unstrung. The recurves take-down with the removal of two hex bolts, while the longbows incorporate a neat and clean system that Black Widow calls their “Locket Socket.” This setup offers absolutely zero evidence that the bow can be taken down, because the upper and lower halves of the bow fit together so very precisely, and the connection is concealed by the grip of the bow, made, in this case, of beaver-tail leather. A “Locket Socket” equipped bow comes apart much in the same manner as a fine quality fly rod, making it far easier to transport in a case, on in a backpack during a hunt.

My own Black Widow PMA-X, in Bocote. Canandaigua, NY, April, 2009.

Once the photography had been completed for the catalog, I was finally able to play a little bit with each of the bows! I had received the go-ahead from Roger and Toby to hold a Black Widow Demo Night at Creekwood Archery, in Brockport, NY. It was pretty informal, but a dozen interested guys showed up to shoot the bows, and experience the fine craftsmanship that goes into each of them. I was able to provide some good information to most of the questions that were asked of me that night, and it seemed that everyone really enjoyed having this rare kind of opportunity! Since Black Widow deals directly with their customers, it’s not really possible to just pop into an archery pro shop and try one out. Having several different models close at hand on this particular evening was a pretty special deal!

The PMA-X Camo Hunter and Matt's barn.

A couple days later, just prior to shipping the bows back to Missouri, I connected with good friend and creative writer, Matt Smythe. Matt had come out to Creekwood for the demo night, and was interested in spending a little more time with a couple of the bows so that he could do a bit of a write-up for his personal blog site, Fishingpoet.com. Initially his intent was to do a product review of a Black Widow recurve and a longbow. I wound up bringing all of the bows to Matt’s house, where we started shooting at a block target inside his barn, and later migrated to the backyard, where we had set up a 3D whitetail buck target. Matt’s dad, Steve, had joined us, and was really enjoying shooting the longbows in particular! In the end, the written piece became more about Matt’s first real experience with top-end traditional bows, and with the instinctive shooting method. Here’s a link to Matt’s great story of this day, titled Of Blood and Bows. Fishingpoet.com is chock-full of other great material that you’re sure to enjoy, too. Take a few minutes to go and give it a look.

I could see it coming from half a mile away. It wasn’t here just yet, but it would be soon. The air to the northwest was becoming more and more opaque. The wind had picked up and carried with it a deeper chill.

There has, for years, been something very special to me about being in the woods during archery season when the first real snows of the year blew in. It’s one of the moments that I look forward to each deer season, but don’t always get to experience. Sitting in a treestand, watching the wall of snowflakes approach from across a field, or through the hardwoods, somehow has always brought me a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility. I deeply inhale those first breaths of winter, watching tall, rust colored grasses sway in protest to the coming season. I listen to the whispering static of the flakes throwing themselves at the last remaining oak leaves. It brings me to a place where I feel I’m a greater part of it all. It brings a sense of belonging. To the land. To the Earth. It’s one of those absolutely beautiful moments in the woods where I can only stand there and absorb as much of it as I can. Here, in this moment, I’m no longer an intruder.

After a while, the snow falls harder. The wind gusts blow swirling waves of snowflakes across the fields and through the woods. As hard as it’s coming down, the snow still isn’t able to stick to anything. The squirrels seem to sense what’s coming soon. They pick up their pace, collecting and hoarding all the acorns they can gather. Always looking over their shoulders for the fox whose den is nearby. Chickadees flit about abruptly, almost nervously, looking for seeds among the branches. I turn up the back of my collar against the wind. I can feel the flakes melting on my face as I strain to look through it all for the forms of deer. Nothing is moving out there. Yet, everything around me is moving. I’ve always been struck by this contrast, of how the scene before me can be filled with so much movement and busy energy, and at the same time, seem so very still and calm. Silent, cozy and welcoming, despite the cold wind.

I take these moments home from the woods with me and store them away for a time when I long for them.

On newsstands NOW!

It was back in early November of 2009 that for me, at least, the groundwork for this project began to form. It was about that time that my friend, Garret Armstrong, of Elite Archery, shared with me pictures that he had just taken in the field of Chris Kiernan’s 2009 Illinois archery buck. I’m pretty certain that my jaw dropped, and I laughed out loud in amazement when I first saw how truly incredible this deer was! Back in November, though, I had no idea that I would have the opportunity to photograph the mounted buck for the July 2010 “kickoff” issue of North American Whitetail Magazine!

Chris Kiernan, of Illinois, is a member of the Elite Archery Pro Staff, and has several big whitetail bucks to his credit. On November 1, 2009, he killed what was to become the pending Illinois State Record for a non-typical whitetail taken with bow and arrow. I was able to meet Chris at the ATA show in Columbus, Ohio in mid-January, and it was at this point that we started to discuss the possibility of doing some studio photography to accompany the field images that Garret had done in November. Chris was in the early stages of writing his article, exclusively for North American Whitetail. It was also at this time that I was able to meet and have a conversation with Gordon Whittington, Editor in Chief of the magazine, and begin to understand what types of images they would need for the upcoming article.

The Kiernan Buck as photographed on April 4, 2010.

It wouldn’t actually be until early April, though, that Chris and his lovely wife, Maria, would drive the mounted trophy from Illinois to our studios at Myers Creative Imaging in Rochester, NY. We had made arrangements a couple of weeks prior to the shoot, and I had previously done some lighting tests with one of Garret Armstrong’s bigger whitetail mounts. When the Kiernan buck arrived that Saturday morning, we were all set to go. Once we had the mount arranged on a solid post in the studio, I spent some time with Chris and Garret just looking at the deer. The antler structure and mass were just incredible. There were so many details in the antlers that required close examination! Lots of “Ooooh’s,” “Wow’s,” and “Holy cow’s!” as I recall. I was blown away seeing the deer up close like this.

With Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts cups in hand, we spent time walking around the mount, looking at it from different perspectives, trying to decide which camera position would ultimately tell the best story of this buck. The perspective we kept coming back to is the one you see in the image used on the cover. After shooting some more refined tests, and working on the lighting until we were happy, we proceeded to make the cover photo, and then turned the pedestal at different increments to capture the buck from all angles. The shape of the buck’s antlers change dramatically when viewed from the sides! One of the side views we photographed, shown below, accompanies the article in its opening spread.

A stunning view of the whitetail buck's left side.

Several hours after the buck came through the front doors of the studio, he was gently packed back up in the truck, and before the Kiernan’s headed back to Illinois, we headed over to Dinosaur Barbecue for a little celebratory lunch of pulled pork, brisket, and loads of other good stuff! The Spring day was warm enough that we could sit outdoors at the Dinosaur and overlook the mighty Genesee River as it rushed North to Lake Ontario. It was a very satisfying way to end a really great day.

The story of Chris and his buck is one of a lifelong passion for deer hunting, of strategy, restraint, persistence, and success. It’s a really nice read! I would encourage you to hit up your local newsstand for a copy of North American Whitetail to check it out!

My New Year holiday weekend was capped off with the completion of photography for Elite Archery’s 2010 Product Catalog. I’m really excited to get my hands on the final printed piece, because the PDF I saw online today looks just great! I’ve had a really fantastic time working with Garret Armstrong, the VP of Marketing and Sales for Elite Archery, and have enjoyed spending time getting to know the rest of their team, Maggie Armstrong, Missy and Denny Sharrone, and Pete Crawford, the company President. It’s both energizing and refreshing to be working with people who believe so deeply in producing high quality products, are dedicated to supporting their customers, and genuinely love what they do.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-439 " title="GT500-ANTHb" src="http://granttaylorimages.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/GT500-ANTHb-300x450.jpg" alt="Elite Archery's GT500, in Anthracite Gray.
Eric Barbehenn, from our shop at Myers Creative Imaging, was the driving force behind the retouching of the images, and preparing them for going to press. Many hours were spent at the computers in the studio during this post-production process, after the photography was complete. At our latest estimate, 13 gallons of Starbucks Coffee and 29 pounds of Almond M&M’s were consumed during the entire project. Amy Millert and Jennifer Morse provided a great deal of help in the studio on our shooting days, and I felt very fortunate to have had them as part of the team!

Elite Archery's One Piece Bow Quiver, in Realtree AP, mounted on a 2010 Judge.
Some really exciting, new products have been added to Elite Archery’s already solid arsenal of bows for 2010. Elite’s newest bow, The Judge, is a very sweet looking piece of equipment, featuring an axle to axle length just a whisker under 35 inches, Elite’s new Revolution cams, and a 6 inch brace height. Also new this year are one and two-piece Treelimb quivers, and a line of 7 and 11 inch stabilizers that are Doinker equipped, and feature a smoke colored acrylic rod that is etched with the Elite Archery logo. These accessories have been designed in a way that beautifully complements Elite’s bows aesthetically, and they look as though they will perform solidly and effectively as they should. Other new additions to the product line include a hip quiver and a soft-sided bow case that has to be one of the nicest looking cases I’ve seen!

I had worked with Dan Jones on a shoot recently, when John Myers was doing some photography for Catalyst Direct. Dan is an Art Director with that agency. During the afternoon, I had asked Dan if he’d be interested in being photographed for my portfolio of bowhunting related work. I thought that he would fit the project really well, especially with the beard he had grown since last time I’d seen him. He said sure, but there was a catch. He was getting rid of the beard in a few days, so we needed to do the photography very soon!

Dan was willing to hang on to the beard just long enough for me to organize the details and find the right kind of day to photograph him. We had scheduled the shoot for this morning and after picking Dan up at his house, made a stop at Starbucks on the way out of town. We then drove to one of my favorite locations, the property I hunt in Canandaigua, NY. I’d had the idea for this portait in my head for some time, and had done some quick test shot a couple weeks prior when I had been on the same property with Matt Smythe.

The morning was overcast at first, but weather reports claimed that there would be breaks of sun. For a while, I wasn’t sure that was going to happen, but eventually, things worked out just as I had hoped they would. We had a really great morning, a good visit and a few laughs during the ride and the shoot. I’m really pleased with the photography, and have popped in a few samples here. Thanks again, Dan. I really appreciate your help, and hope the beard wasn’t too painful coming off!

Special thanks to Mark Bibbens and family for allowing me to create these photographs in such a gorgeous location!

I got together with my good friend, Matt Smythe this morning to do some photography of him in one of my deer hunting stands in Canandaigua. It was an absolutely stunning Spring morning! I picked him up at 7:00 and headed over the hill to the property I hunt during archery season. We saw countless Canada Geese, and probably a dozen deer along our way. It made us wish we were heading out to hunt instead!

I had gone to this location the previous weekend to plan the shot, choose the perspective, and set up my twenty foot climbing stick ahead of time. That accomplished, all we would have to do was find the right morning, get out there and execute the shot. We didn’t have a great deal of time this morning, because I wanted to have the sun low in the sky and behind Matt. He also had commitments later that involved kids, birthday cake and bowling! Fortunately for me, he was gracious enough to carve out some time to get out in the woods first!

Everything came together pretty smoothly. I used my Tree Saddle to get up a little higher than Matt was, and standing on top of the climbing stick, was able to move around some to make some subtle changes in perspective.

After I felt we had accomplished all I had hoped to, we packed up the gear, hiked back to the truck, and did some quick test shots in a couple different locations I plan to use soon.

I got Matt dropped off at his place on schedule, visited with his family for a little bit, and headed back to the woods to walk around for a while and look for shed antlers.

I really hated to leave to come back to the city this afternoon! By the way, Matt, next time, we’ll go out for a proper breakfast afterward!

A huge thank you to Mark Bibbens for making his land accessible for my shoots!

Friday, March 13 was a big night for quite a few people in Rochester! The RAF Addy Awards 2009 event was held downtown at the Clarion Riverside Hotel. From 6:30 pm until 1:00 am, people from all walks of the local advertising community came together once again to celebrate and honor excellence in advertising and the advertising arts.

Attendees were photographed on the red carpet upon arrival, then were whisked off to an energetic cocktail hour and walk-through viewing of this year’s entries. It was wonderful to see such a huge collection of quality work! Eventually, the crowd was encouraged into the ballroom for the presentation of awards, and entertained through the evening by the classiest of Emcees, Robin Lohkamp and Joe Mayernik.

Christine Walker and Grant arriving at the event.

Thirty Addy’s, the highly coveted trophies, were awarded, and thirty-five Laddy’s were presented as well, each in salute to great creative achievement. Best of Show was awarded to Martino Flynn for their Dundee Ales & Lagers campaign, and the 2009 Silver Award was presented to Sharon Napier, President and CEO of Partners & Napier.

After the awards presentations, the masses headed back out to the cocktail lounge and social area for a couple more hours of celebrating, back-slapping, hand-shaking, congratulatory fun! I think everyone that I saw was really enjoying the evening! In many cases, it’s the only chance that some have to catch up with friends that they may only see once or twice a year.

Dan Hare, hunter and friend, poses with one of my winning entries.

I was really excited to have been presented with three Laddy trophies, one for my self-promotional booklet, “Seasons,” on which I collaborated with Rachel Spence and Matt Smythe. The other two Laddy’s were awarded for two series of images from my body of bowhunting photography.

Our “studio family” really turned out in force that night! We had a table full of smiling faces, and all had dressed beautifully for the occasion! Christine had come into town for the event, Kathy brought Frank, in a bright red jacket, Heather (with baby on board) looked radiant, and our good friend Amy looked very springy in her pink dress. John wasn’t able to arrive until later due to a stage production he was acting in, but Heather had made the trip to the stage to accept the two Laddy’s he had won for two separate entries in the photography category!

Here are a few pictures from our night!

Today marks the completion and launch of another project that I’m very proud of, and extremely excited about!

With the help of some very good friends, a 16 page, Bowhunting-themed booklet has come off the printing presses of Canfield and Tack, and will begin circulation immediately. The booklet, titled “Seasons,” is a self-promotion piece that will be sent to creatives associated with hunting and outdoor clothing and equipment manufacturers.

For their tremendous dedication to the project, and their beautiful work, I owe Rachel Spence and Matt Smythe a great deal of thanks. I think that both Rachel’s design sense and Matt’s writing complement and support the images wonderfully. The two are a real pleasure to work with. I’m really fortunate to have them on my team!

I’d also like to take a moment to give a HUGE “Thank You!” to the people in the photographs and behind the scenes – Brian Flaherty, Mike Marini, Paul Shaver, Tige Noni, Matt Smythe, Besayda Soto, Lisa Nasca, Dan Hare and his family, Dennis Minoli and Jamie Crosier.

Special thanks to Marcia and Ben Adams of Creekwood Archery, Stephanie Snow for my cool logo, and also to Willie Osterman, Michelle Adragna, and Mark Bibbens for providing some beautiful locations!

Cameras: Canon Powershot Pro S1 (self portrait.) Canon EOS 1DS Mk 2 and 3 (bowhunting project.)

The completion and launch of my website is a very exciting event for me, and seems the perfect way to punctuate the end of a really fantastic year! I owe a great deal of thanks to Christine Walker, who concepted, designed and developed the site. I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s very good at what she does, and furthermore is a wonderful girlfriend.

I would also like to thank my good friends and co-workers at Myers Creative Imaging for their continued love and support. John, Linda, Heather, Kathy and Eric – You guys rock!

The eve of a New Year is traditionally a time for establishing resolutions and setting goals for future achievement. One of my biggest goals for 2009, which this website will help to attain, is to gain new clients who have a need for great photography of people, food and products.

Another, more focused goal, is to create great images for new clients whose companies manufacture outdoor clothing and equipment, especially that which is related to hunting.

Having the opportunity to set such goals is something that I’m very thankful for, and I’m looking forward to all the possibilities that are ahead.

My intent is to use this blog to help viewers see a little further inside the workings of my photography, and to try and keep the whole website package fresh and interesting! Thanks for checking it out!
